Game #1: Iowa Defenders (66),
Barnstormers (56)
The weekend-opener for the ‘Stormers
had them pitted against the heavily
favored Iowa Defenders.
The game was played
fairly closely throughout the first
half, with guard Tyler Putz driving
to the basket, creating easy looks for
his teammates, and getting to the
free throw line six times in the
opening period. A late run by
the Defenders at the end of the half
gave them a 7 point half-time lead.
In the second half, the Defenders
came out strong, and opened up a 15
point lead. Led by forward
Will Roth's 17 second-half points,
the 'Stormers fought back and
reduced the Defender's lead to 6.
In the end, the Defenders'
outstanding ball-control and clock
management forced the 'Stormers to
foul, ending the game with a 10
point loss.
Roth
finished with a
team-high 19 points and 6 rebounds. Other top
performers included Putz, who chipped in
9
points and 4 assists, and forward
Jon Keller, who added 9 points
(three 3-pointers) and 6 rebounds.
Game #2:
Barnstormers (69), Renegades (59)
In the ‘Stormers second game, they
were matched up against the Iowa
Renegades, who are led by 14U
Barnstormers player Jonathan Musser.
Musser played with his school
team-mates in the USSSA tournament,
and was sorely missed by the
Barnstormers. Fueled by center
Nick Wilson's 12 first half points,
the 'Stormers opened up an early
25-15 lead mid-way through the first
half, only to see the Renegades
fight back to make it a 5 point game
at half-time. In the
hard-fought second half, the
Renegades had the 'Stormers lead
down to 2, but a seven point
explosion in the last two minutes by
swingman Isaac Gardner iced the game
for the 'Stormers, who held on to
win by 10 points.
Wilson led the team with 19 points,
and he dominated inside with 11
rebounds and 4 blocks. Forward
Will Roth added 13 points and 6
boards, while Gardner finished with
11 and Tyler Putz chipped in 10.
Forward Jon Keller was injured early
in the first half of the game, and
would not return the rest of the
tournament.
Game #3: All-Iowa Attack (67),
Barnstormers (57)
The third game of the
day saw the 14U Barnstormers matched
up against the hometown All-Iowa
Attack, coached by former Iowa State
player and tournament director Jake
Sullivan. Nick Wilson was
again dominant in the paint early on
in the game, scoring 12 points in
the first half. The Attack
were hot from outside in the first
half, hit five three-pointers, and
took a 7 point lead into the
halftime break. In the end,
ice-cold free throw shooting (9/19)
and several costly turnovers in the
second half doomed the 'Stormers,
who finished the game losing by 10
points.
Wilson again led the
team in scoring with 16 points, and
finished with a season-high 16
rebounds. Forward Will Roth
added 10 points, 6 rebounds,
and 5 assists, while Tayler
Bontrager tossed in 7 points.
Guard Chance Grady also went down
with an ankle injury early in the
game, and he too wouldn't play the
rest of the tournament.
Game #4:
Barnstormers (58), Des Moines
Jaguars (54)
On Sunday morning of
the tournament, the banged-up
Barnstormers returned to the court
to face the Des Moines Jaguars, who
just came off a big win against the
Iowa Renegades the night before.
The game was a hard-fought battle,
with the 'Stormers taking a 6 point
lead into the half-time
intermission. Led by some
outstanding shooting in the
second-half, the Jaguars fought back
to take the lead, 40-39, midway
through the second. The 'Stormers
finally found their touch from the
free-throw line late in the game,
though, led by six straight free
throws from forward Tyler Smith in
the last two minutes of the game.
The 'Stormers went on to win a close
one in the end, 58-54.
The 'Stormers had a
very balanced offensive game,
including four players in double
figures, led by swingman Isaac
Gardner with 14 points. Nick
Wilson added 12 points and 11
rebounds, while Tyler Smith and
Tyler Putz chipped in 10 points a
piece.
Game #5:
Barnstormers (69), Norwalk Warriors
(27)
The Barnstormers
played their final game of the
tournament against the Norwalk
Warriors. The short-handed 'Stormers
came out of the gates in a hurry
with an aggressive pressure defense,
and took an early lead that they
would never relinquish. It
seemed like guard Kellen Sweeney was
all over the court, getting in the
passing lanes and creating havoc on
defense. The Barnstormers took
a commanding 25 point halftime lead,
and never looked back, finishing the
tournament with a 42 point win.
Sweeney was a one-man
wrecking crew for the Barnstormers
in the win, scoring 15 points, while
adding 9 steals and 8 assists.
Will Roth contributed 12 points in
the win, and Isaac Gardner was also
in double-digits with 11 points.
Center Nick Wilson once again
dominated in the painted area,
pulling down 9 rebounds and blocking
4 shots. |
