Two former Barnstormers, Cedar Rapids Jefferson's Kellen Sweeney and Xavier's Jon Keller, were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.  Sweeney was drafted in the 2nd Round (69th pick overall) by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Keller was drafted in the 11th Round by the Seattle Mariners.  Sweeney and Keller join another former Barnstormer, BJ Hermsen, who was drafted in 2008 and currently plays in the Minnesota Twins minor-league system.  Congratulations, guys!
Former Barnstormer and current Northern Iowa Panther, Ali Farokhmanesh, has landed on the cover of the latest issue of Sports Illustrated after hitting the game winning shot that knocked off #1 Kansas in the Division 1 NCAA tournament.  The Panthers advance to the "Sweet 16" to face Michigan State on Friday evening. The Panthers also feature former ‘Stormer Matt Morrison and have signed current high school senior Nate Buss, who will begin playing there next season. Good Luck, Panthers!
The Barnstormers 14U and 13U Teams travelled last weekend to Lawrence, Kansas to participate in the USSSA "Best of the Midwest".  All three teams placed in the event... the 13U Black team finished 3rd with a 2-2 record, the 13U Gold team finished 2nd with a 2-1 record, and the 14U 'Stormers went 4-0, defeating the Oklahoma Explosion in the championship game.  Kyle Haber (Dubuque Senior) was named the 8th Grade division MVP, while Spencer Haldeman (West Dubuque) was named the MVP of the 7th grade division.

In addition to the tournament, several "skills" competitions took place in Lawrence.  The 13U Black and 14U 'Stormers each won their age groups for team three point shooting.  Dakota Cooling (Iowa Valley) won his division's Free Throw Championship, and Josh Koeppel (Solon) and Casey Schlatter (Iowa Falls) each took home second place for their age groups.
The 14U and 15U Barnstormers were in Des Moines last weekend for the Iowa AAU 15U State Tournament.  The 15U 'Stormers won the 15U AAU State Championship, beating Kingdom Hoops in the semis before defeating Martin Brothers in the finals and finishing 4-0 on the event.  The 14U 'Stormers competed well while playing "up" a grade, going 2-0 in pool play before losing in the quarterfinals.    Josh Weeber (Dubuque Senior) was selected as the 15U State MVP, and Jeremy Morgan (Iowa City West) was named to the All-Tournament Team.  Congratulations, 'Stormers!

Since 1977, the top boys high school basketball seniors nationwide have been selected to play in the McDonald's All-American Basketball Team.  12 players from the Class of 2010 who played with the Barnstormers during their high school careers were nominated for spots on this year's team.  Congratulations to Joe Ament, Will Artino, Tayler Bontrager, Nate Buss, Chanse Creekmur, Isaac Gardner, Blake Haluska, Quincy King, Tyler Putz, Will Roth, Nick Wilson, and Trayvonn Wright on the honor!

The Barnstormers 7th Grade boys participated last weekend in the 13U AAU State tournament in Des Moines.  The 'Stormers 13U Black squad went 1-2 for the event, going 1-1 in pool play before playing the Barnstormers Gold team in the first round of tournament play.  The 13U Gold team went 4-1, going undefeated in pool play and losing in the semis to the eventual champions.  13U Gold finished in third place and qualified for AAU Nationals in Memphis, TN this summer.

The Barnstormers 8th Grade boys travelled to the Quad Cities last weekend for their first tournament, the Thanksgiving Shootout.  The 'Stormers went 2-0 in pool play and won their first two tournament games before facing a very talented Rock Island Raptors in the finals.  With a tied championship game and 20 seconds remaining, Kyle Haber (Dubuque Senior, 2014) hit a big three to put the 'Stormers ahead for good.  The boys finished 5-0 and came home with the championship.  Congratulations, guys!

Barnstormers Tryouts!

We will hold tryouts on Saturday, August 21 for our 2010-2011 Barnstormers teams.

9:00AM-  6th-9th Grade Girls
11:00AM-  5th-7th Grade Boys
1:00PM-  8th-9th Grade Boys
3:00PM-  10th-11th Grade Boys

Tryouts will be held at the brand-new GWE Academy, located at 850 Twixt Town Road NE in Cedar Rapids.

Cost to try out is $15, and will include a free t-shirt.  All grades are based on the upcoming 2010-2011 School Year.
