10th and 7th Grade Boys Coach

After spending several years coaching high school and youth basketball in western Iowa, Coach Stephen joined forces with Jamie Johnson to create the Barnstormers program in 2005.  Coach Stephen left the Barnstormers in 2007 to accept an assistant coach and professor position at Upper Iowa University, but returned the Barnstormers and resumed his co-director responsibilities in 2009.  At UIU, Greg was the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, and taught classes in Exercise Science.  Coach Stephen is a nationally certified strength and conditioning specialist, and holds certifications in CPR, AED, and first aid.  He was the director of the Mercy Acceleration sports performance program for Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids for seven years.  He is a graduate of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, and currently resides in Delhi.

Jamie Johnson

11th Grade Boys Coach

Coach Johnson is one of the founders of Barnstormers Basketball and the owner of Elite Sports, USA.  Through Elite Sports, Jamie organizes basketball events throughout Iowa, including spring individual "Showcases", and team tournaments.  Prior to coaching with the Barnstormers, Jamie assisted in the operation of events for FutureStars Basketball, while also working as a national talent scout and recruiting analyst.  Through his experience in scouting, coach Johnson has developed relationships with countless college coaches at a variety of playing levels. He has also written for online publications like Hoopmasters.com, and Rivals.com, among others.  Jamie is a graduate of the University of Iowa, with a degree in Media.  He lives in North Liberty with his two boys, Drayden and Logan.

9th Grade Boys Coach

Coach Pettigrew joined the 'Stormers in 2008 after spending 3 years as the founder/director of the Iowa Triple Threat Hoops AAU program.  In addition to his coaching duties with the Barnstormers, Coach Pettigrew also organizes individual workouts for players in the fall and spring, and spends countless hours organizing and directing the Barnstormers fundraising efforts for families who need extra support.  Jamie is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelors degree in Sports Management.  He is a proud father of five; including two boys who are past (Alex Coleman, 2006-2009) and current (Jo Coleman, 2007-2011) members of the Barnstormers.

8th Grade Coach

"Coach G" has spent time as the head varsity basketball coach at Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, and at Marin Academy in San Rafael, California.  In his first year at Marin Academy, he led his squad to the California State playoffs.  Coach Gianforte is a graduate of Delaware State University, with a degree in secondary education and an emphasis in social studies.  John participated in both basketball and football at the Division 1(AA) level in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.  Coach Gianforte resides in Cedar Rapids with his wife Stacey, and children Giuseppe and Vincenzo.

Michael Morgan
11th and 4th Grade Boys Coach

Coach Morgan began coaching with the Barnstormers program in 2007, following a seven year coaching career at the University of Iowa.  Michael is a Hawkeye alum, playing at his alma mater from 1985-88.  He joined Lisa Bluder's staff as an Assistant Coach in 2000, and was a part of 6 post-season berths and a Big Ten Championship.  During his playing career at Iowa, he was a part of four NCAA tournament appearances, was awarded the Most Dedicated Player Award in 1986, Most Improved Academic Award in 1988, and earned his Bachelors Degree in Communication.  Michael is happily married and a father of five.  His sons Jeremy and Marcus are both members of the Barnstormers program, and daughter Mikaela plays high school basketball at Iowa City West.  Michael's oldest daughter, Crystal Smith, was an All-American at the University of Iowa and currently plays professionally in Turkey.

KC Schmitt
6th Grade Coach

Coach Schmitt played collegiate basketball at Clarke University, until he began coaching at Dubuque Senior High School as an assistant. In 2004 and 2005, Coach Schmitt directed and coached the Iowa Magic AAU program, before leaving to accept an assistant coaching position at Loras College in 2006. In his six seasons with the Duhawks, they amassed a record of 102-59, winning two Iowa Conference championships and making it to the NCAA Division III tournament twice. Coach Schmitt is an Assistant Superintendent of Greens at the Dubuque Golf and Country Club in Dubuque, Iowa where he also resides with his wife Alicia, and son Chandler.

  Miguel Villagrana
9th and 7th Grade Assistant Coach

Coach Villagrana joins the Barnstormers this season after a long stint coaching youth and high school basketball at Columbus Community High School in Iowa.  Miguel was the varsity boys basketball coach at Columbus in 2009-2010.  Prior to coaching the varsity boys, he spent three years as a varsity assistant with the Columbus girls program.  Coach Villagrana's son, Emilio, is a two-year member of the 'Stormers.  Miguel works as a network technician for the Iowa City Community School district, and lives in Solon with his three children, Andrew, Alexadria, and Emilio.
